A generalized ATM traffic model and its application in bandwidth allocation

To guarantee end-to-end performance for multimedia services, performance bounds are imposed on individual nodes. Under these bounds maximum call arrival rates supported and maximum channel utilization realized are determined. This is essentially a bandwidth allocation and call admission control problem, and thus knowledge of source behavior is critical. To this end, the elementary ON/OFF source is used to model a wide variety of the services that are expected in a broadband network. The authors characterize this source using basic parameters and show how to model representative voice, data, and video sources. They supply these parameters to extent Weinstein's cutoff formula to compute cell overload that occurs during statistical multiplexing. The overload analysis presents a simple method of dimensioning buffer sizes at a node to meet delay and cell loss requirements.<<ETX>>
