MODWT-based fault detection and classification scheme for cross-country and evolving faults

Abstract The extraction of the faulty-signal in overhead transmission lines can expose an exclusive attributes regarding fault type, fault detection and classification in a precise time sphere to design proper protection scheme for real-time application. In this paper, an illustrative signal processing technique, maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) has been demonstrated to excerpt the attributes of the faulty-signals in case of cross-country and evolving faults which are complex in nature. The maximum change in wavelet energy of three-phase instantaneous currents has been considered as a distinct feature for fault detection/classification in a dual-circuit transmission line of Chhattisgarh State Power Transmission Network. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated by performing wide-range of simulation studies in real-time digital simulator (RTDS) laboratory and further the performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated by performing an experimental simulation in a prototypical model of transmission line in the laboratory environment. Moreover, the significance of the proposed scheme is not affected by zero sequence mutual impedance and independent of communication latency because it is employed using one terminal data only.
