Sediment classification and surface type mapping in the Danish Wadden Sea by remote sensing

Abstract The intertidal flats in the Danish Wadden Sea have been mapped by means of a multitemporal classification of 4 Landsat scenes. Distinction is made between 6 surface types. Based on a description of different sedimentary environments, the intertidal sediments are divided into 7 groups with different textural compositions. The relation between sediment types and surface classification is discussed. For 3 tidal areas the proportion of the different surface types is compared and discussed in relation to their exposure.
