Novel Experimentation of a 10 kW Geared Medium-Speed Wound-Field Flux Switching Wind Generator Drive

A wound-field flux switching machine prototype (WF-FSM) is manufactured and tested for geared medium-speed wind generator drives. The highlight of the study is the promotion of ease in the manufacturing process which incorporates modular structure of the stator laminations, preformation of the DC and AC coils, perforation of the stator and rotor laminations and the implementation of a hub rotor frame. Beyond these, it is the first time an experimental test is being undertaken at this scale (10 kW power and 0.6 m diameter) on the studied WF-FSM variant. Based on various experimental tests, the confidence level of the finite element analysed model has been established, and a simple manufacturing approach for industrial-scale designations has been set forth.
