Controller order reduction for process control systems

Abstract This paper presents a controller order reduction technique and discusses its application to chemical processes. In many instances, the controller designed to achieve desired stability and performance requirements may be of a significantly high order to prevent or complicate its practical implementation. It becomes critical to obtain an appropriate low-order controller that retains the appealing properties of a high-order controller but is simpler to implement. We achieve this by utilizing the structured singular value setting and by defining an r -function to quantify the relationship between the high-order controller and the low-order controller. Case studies illustrate the implementation of the technique.
