Bradford's Law and Retrieval of Reading Research Journal Literature.

THIS STUDY examines the distribution of 865 articles across 204 source journals reported in the 1979 annual summary of research related to reading to determine the Bradfordian characteristics of the data. Cumulative percentage calculations indicated a proportional monotonic distribution with the scattering of articles among journal titles conforming to Bradford's law revealing a distinct nucleus of high-producing journals and a tailing off to a large number of journals contributing a small number of articles. The implications for retrieving reading research are explored, 10 advantages of an annual summary are presented, and the role of the summary in the future transition to paperless electronic libraries is discussed. The conclusion is that for the immediate future, the print-on-paper summary will continue to provide a valuable tool for the retrieval of reading research.
