SummaryWhen used to classify a ten-year sample of 500 mb pressure surfaces over the western United States, the Kirchhofer sun-of-squares map classification procedure produces self-consistent results. These results are strongly biased by the significance criteria used to make the classification. The selection of criteria must be based on subjective considerations. When criteria were used such that 80% of the 3527-map sample could be characterized, twelve synoptic types were defined, with 42% of the maps grouped in the three largest categories.
