Identity and volition in Facebook digital memorials and the challenges of anticipating interaction

In the social network context, it is worth highlighting the changes in the way people in the digital milieu react to users' physical death. Facebook, for instance, is replete with interactions affected by death. From preliminary studies about digital memorials on Facebook, it has been observed that, although this social network models death issues and anticipated volition of the user, the currently existing solution does not fully meet the requirements suggested by the Social Web. By means of participatory design sessions with active Facebook users, solutions were proposed for design that would emphasize two elements of the social web: Identity and Volition. The resulting prototypes of participatory design were analyzed in the perspective of the challenges of the settings of Interaction Anticipation. The resulting proposals indicate that new solutions introduce more support to anticipating and revealing the deceased user's identity and the memorial's identity.
