Traffic Measurements and Test Equipment in BATMAN

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the BATMAN project. The BATMAN network is an ATM network with 3 switch nodes: One in Aarhus at the research laboratories of Jutland Telephone, another in the centre of Copenhagen at KTAS, and the final one at the Technical University of Denmark (TUD), in Lyngby. The network forms a platform that allows the different partners to carry out experiments with a real ATM network. The BATMAN test bed is considered an experimental network, which allows the users to carry out a variety of different measurements and tests. Performance data giving information about over all cell loss and delay is measured in the switch nodes and transmitted to an external PC. Background traffic and test traffic with different statistical behavior is generated by superposition of a number of on/off sources. The test traffic is analyzed with respect to cell loss, cell delay, and cell delay variation. The burst character of cell losses, or the consecutive cell loss phenomena, is evaluated by the parameter—cell loss rate during congestion.
