Handbook of Knowledge Representation Edited Belief Revision Pavlos Peppas 8.1 Introduction

Publisher Summary The study of the process of belief revision, which gave rise to an exciting research area with the same name, can be traced back to the early 1980s. The framework that has evolved from what is now known as the “AGM paradigm” (or simply AGM) after the initials of its three founders to this date is a dominant framework in belief revision. Much has happened since 1985. The formal apparatus developed has been enhanced and thoroughly studied, new research directions have emerged from it, connections with neighboring fields have been established, and a lot more is currently under way. This chapter discusses the main developments in belief revision, which are presented in a historical order, starting with the classic AGM paradigm following the trail till the present day. After identifying the class of rational revision and contraction functions axiomatically, constructive models for these functions need to be developed.
