� � Abstract :�Dielectricbarrierdischargesprovideasimple� meanstogeneratenonthermal,� nonequilibrium� plasma.�Inthispapertheuseofthedielectricbar rier� dischargeinthesurfacedischargearrangementin� atmosphericairunder�50�Hzacconditionsispresen ted� asanovelandflexibleluminousmediumforartwork .�A� deviceusingthedielectricbarrierdischargeinth is� contexthasbeentermedalightningarcdrawing.�In �its� simplestform,�thelightningarcdrawingconsistso fa� conductingbackplate,�asheetofinsulationandon eor� moreconductingfrontelectrodes.�Thefrontelectro des� andthebackplateformthetwoterminalsofthe� lightningarcdrawing.�Highvoltage,�intherange�1 0- 20�kV,�isappliedbetweentheterminals.�Thedischa rges� areclearlyvisibleindarknessandsemidarkness.�T hey� alsophotographandfilmextremelywell.�A�4�mx�1� m� lightningarcdrawingwasdisplayedatarecentstu dent� festivalattheUniversityofCanterbury.�Ahighvo ltage� testtransformerwasusedtoenergizethedrawings' � 4.2�nFcapacitancetoaround�20�kV.�Asecureareaw as� formedandconductorclearanceswereestablishedin � accordancewithlocalsafetystandards.�
