THE MANUFACTURE OF PRECAST CONCRETE COUNTERWEIGHT UNITS FOR THE SUKKUR BARRAGE, PAKISTAN

This paper describes the specification, mix design and production trials and the manufacture of reinforced concrete, gate counterweight units for the Sukkur barrage on the River Indus in Pakistan. It details the features of concrete specification, selection, storage and pre- conditioning of raw materials, the procedures used during mixing and casting and the curing regime for the concrete units implemented to minimise the effects of producing concrete in a hot arid climate. The production of the units showed that by taking adequate precautions during all stages of the production process, it was possible to produce concrete of high quality using only the intermediate technology available locally.
