The coarsening of γ' in Ni-Al alloys

Abstract The coarsening behaviour of \ gg in an Ni-Al matrix is shown to be in excellent quantitative agreement with all aspects of the Lifshitz-Wagner theory of Ostwald ripening. This system is compared with others for which coarsening data are available and several factors affecting coarsening are discussed. It is concluded that the high symmetry of the cube-shaped \ gg particles and the absence of large coherency strains in the matrix are the factors primarily responsible for the excellent agreement between experiment and theory.
