Functional simulation models for three-level converters using average and switching function concepts

Different converter models can address different concerns in power system studies. In this paper, a functional average model and a switching function model are developed for three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) converters as alternative models to a detailed model in system-level studies. The effectiveness of the developed functional models is validated by comparing simulation performance from two test systems to the results from a detailed model predefined in Matlab/Simulink/SimPowerSystems. The challenges of applying different modeling methods and simulating three-level NPC converters are discussed by comparing the disadvantages, limitations and simulation speed of the three converter models.
