On the Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Mathematics from the Perspective of Teacher Professional Development

The theory of mathematics teachers'professional knowledge has been reconstructed through an expansion of the MK to MPCK among academics.MPCK,originally developed on the theory of knowledge of pedagogy,refers to an exclusive domain of knowledge on the part of mathematics teachers,incorporating knowledge of mathematics,of mathematics pedagogy,and of mathematics learning.It is an important indicator of mathematics teachers'professional development,reflecting mathematics teachers'proficiency in both "mathematics"and "mathematics pedagogy".Drawing on theories related to MPCK,the present paper argues that an active enhancement of technical knowledge on the part of math teachers is a prerequisite for the success of math teachers'professional development,of which,apractice-oriented teacher education serves as the cornerstone.
