CLOT LYSIS WITH FIBRINOLYSIS: PROGRESS REPORT *

T h e balance between enzymes, activators, and inhibitors of the clotting and clot-dissolving mechanisms maintain blood in the fluid state. Any disturbance in the amount or balance of clotting factors leads t o hemorrhage. Thrombotic phenomena result froni a deficiency in clot dissolution or lysis. Since intravascular thrombosis accounts for the majority of non-neoplastic fatalities i n the adul t population, any treatment which would hasten dissolution of these thrombi would obviously represent a significant therapeutic contribution. Commercial fibrinolytic preparations are available for lysis of t he fibrin in intravascular thrombi. This paper reviews our experience with such a fibrinolytic agent, and presents additional da t a concerning this method of treatment.
