The main challenge in the development of direct injection gasoline engines remains the fulfilment of the future emissions regulations. The insurmountable hurdle is not the emissions limits but the challenge in the present time remains to extract the consumption potential for lean driving. Due to technological conditions there are differences in the emissions of port injection and direct injection engines. Nevertheless, the overwhelming share of the emissions originate from the warm up phase. However, for the warm up phase direct injection gives additional chances, which oppose the risks and challenges for lean operation.
