Multidisciplinary Design Optimization(MDO) and its research situation are introduced.Its research contents and related algorithms are expounded.According to the characteristics of underground engineering,the feasibility of MDO being used in underground engineering is analyzed;the comprehensive definition of MDO is put forward,and a modularization-based design method for the application of MDO to underground engineering and its problem-solving idea is provided.The complicated,uncertain and non-linear characteristics of underground engineering are the bottlenecks of the application of MDO to underground engineering.Therefore,the application of MDO in underground engineering is still at a stage of exploration and expected to be further researched.
