Bandwidth techniques for digital recursive filters used in step scan radars

New bandwidth analysis techniques for digital recursive filters used in phased array step scan radars are presented. The analysis is applicable to filters processing a finite number of samples with or without initialization. The techniques include the calculation of the usable and the 3 dB bandwidths. The bandwidth techniques are used to study the effect of processing a limited number of samples and initialization of the pass-band of conventional filters. They are also used to evaluate the pass-band of recursive filters with optimum clutter rejection. Such techniques are applied to simplify the design of a first-order filter which uses initialization and maximizes the usable bandwidth.
