Exploring with twenty-first century skills

Twenty-first century skills include critical thinking, creativity, collaborating and communicating (Partnerships for the 21st century, 2008). Here, we focus on creativity and consider the ways in which using tablet technology provides a new modality for being creative in the twenty-first century. We observed children in two kindergarten classes (four-five years of age) located in a Victorian state school as they played with tablets (Microsoft Surface Pro) over the period of a year. The creative activities that the children engaged with also provided context for collaborations and communicating their ideas and enabled them to talk about their learning with teachers and peers.
