On Finding That Speech Is Special

This paper is about a subject that has, I think, been too much taken for granted. The subject is perception of phonetic segments, the consonants and vowels that lie near the surface of language. My aim is to promote the hypothesis that the perception of those segments rests on specialized processes. These support a phonetic mode of perception, they serve a distinctively linguistic function, and they are part of the larger specialization for language.
