A flexibility approach for damage identification of cantilever-type structures with bending and shear deformation

Abstract Slender structures such as tall buildings and chimneys can be modeled as cantilevers with bending and shear deformation. A flexibility approach for damage identification of cantilever-type structures by utilizing the data of dynamic modes is proposed in this paper. An important advantage of the approach is that it only requires a small number of modes, so that it is convenient for practical application. The effectiveness of the approach is verified by numerical and experimental examples.
