Universal motors are series field connected commutaot brush type motors commonly used for portable tools and other application. The word universal implies that energization may he either AC or DC, although AC excitation is by far more common and is the case studied here. Phase controled DC drives system gained a high popularity due to their simple implementation despite the disadvantage of their poor input power factor especially for large values of phase delay angle.
