Old and New – the Complex Problem of Integrating New Functions into Old Building☆

Abstract The necessity to address, both historical and industrial buildings, in order to adapt them to new functions produced two distinct approaches. First – the “augmentative” approach is used for the inner city buildings. New volumes were accommodated into the available spaces, in order to avoid interventions inside the existing structures. The new structure enabled the avoidance of the structural upgrades, simply connecting the new and old. Second – the “enveloping” approach, used for the industrial buildings; a 3D overlapping structure is “coating” the existing building, being anchored directly on its structure. The new envelope is “hollow”, accommodating new functions. It also offers a new identity to the building.
