ANALYTICAL MODELS FOR RAIL LINE CAPACITY ANALYSIS

This paper presents several different formulations of analytical models for estimating train delays on single track rail lines. Each model formulation is tested and the results compared with the other analytical models, with two types of event-oriented simulations and with a "Jam Capacity" analysis of the same rail line. Analytical models can provide an accurate and low cost alternative to event-oriented simulation. As a statistical sampling technique, simulation model analysis is subject to errors which are not present in an analytical model approach.
