Hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL or HIL) simulation is a real-time technique that is used in the development and test of complex process systems. HIL simulation provides an effective platform by adding the complexity of the system under control to the test platform. HIL simulations are performed to provide a more robust design with the typical configuration. The benefits include increased system reliability, more efficient development and system integration, and lower costs to reduce faults and improve the design. Additional HIL objectives may focus on hardware and software integration, fault simulation testing, determining and developing design centering parameters, identifying design weaknesses and limitations, evaluating transient performance including linear steady state and transient testing over the operating envelope, and establishing calibration tables for electronics sub-systems. Any system could benefit from HIL simulation, and applications range from medical devices, industrial machines, power generation systems appliances, aerospace power systems and avionics, and automotive and process control systems. This chapter will introduce the basic concepts of HIL simulation.
