The beam balance as a detector in experimental gravitation

We report here on the details of construction of a beam balance designed for use in tests of gravitational theory. The instrument has exhibited reliable behaviour and a sensitivity to gravitational acceleration of 2 x 10-10 m s-2. We describe a preliminary measurement of the newtonian gravitational constant and suggest other tests for which this balance might be used.
