Data processing and experiment design for the restoring force surface method, part II: Choice of excitation signal

Abstract The restoring force methods of non-linear system identification require the simultaneous measurement of acceleration, velocity and displacement data. A practical approach requires that one should only measure one of these quantities and estimate the other two by numerical methods. This paper is concerned with determining whether a careful choice of excitation signal can minimise the amount of data processing required.
