First-order transitions and tricritical points in DyAl2: A realisation of the three-state Potts model

The magnetisation of the cubic ferromagnet DyAl2 in a magnetic field H has been studied. In a recent paper, Mukamel, Domany and Fisher (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol.37, p.565 (1976)) have shown that for such cubic magnets there is a phase transition described by the three-state Potts model when H is applied along the (111) direction. This transition is found to be of first order, in agreement with mean field and renormalisation group theories, but in contrast to series expansions and exact calculations in two dimensions. Evidence of a tricritical point is presented.
