Enhancing the decision-making process for paper mill schedulers

Scheduling production and distribution of paper is a complex task requiring the consideration of numerous constraints and objectives. Compounding the problem are process interactions where the scheduling of one stage of the production process may negatively impact downstream processes. A new decision support system for scheduling paper manufacturing and distribution considers multiple scheduling objectives and stages of manufacturing and distribution simultaneously. It creates multiple production and distribution schedule alternatives that demonstrate the tradeoffs between objectives. As the final decision maker, the scheduler can choose the best alternative. The system has been used successfully at several North American paper mills, where it improved scheduling and the decision-making process by increasing manufacturing yield, decreasing transportation costs, and improving customer service.
