Optimisation of squirrel cage induction motors using finite element method and genetic algorithms

The aim of the study is to find the best geometry for a squirrel cage induction motor satisfying given requirements. The motor is modelled by the two-dimensional finite element method with a simulation of the rotating rotor. A genetic algorithm is used in optimisation. Two examples are presented in the paper. In the first example, the losses of an inverter fed motor are minimised under given constraints. In the second example, the task is to find the structure for the motor having a high locked rotor torque and low locked rotor current.
