Photonic quasicrystals for application in WDM systems

Photonic quasicrystals can possess an isotropic (complete) photonic bandgap even in the case of low refractive indices of the constitutive materials, which makes them attractive optical materials with important technological applications. In this work, several aspects related to the design of waveguides and cavities using the two-dimensional (2D) octagonal quasiperiodic lattice are investigated numerically. As an example, the integration of waveguides and a resonating cavity to design an add/drop filter for wavelength division multiplexing applications is briefly described.
