Technology to drive road maintenance forward

A geographical information system (GIS) has been built by A-One, the Highways Agency's Area 14 MAC (Managing Agent Contractor) in the north east of England, UK. The GIS is an electronic inventory of key information on highway assets in Area 14, each item linked to maps and aerial photography. Area 14 is forming a benchmark in road maintenance best practice. The development of the A-One system was partially driven by the Highways Agency's focus on better management of flood risks. With the help of data management specialist IETG, A-One has been surveying drainage and geo referencing condition data and CCTV video footage of drain runs between manholes. Data from traffic count sites, traffic speed condition surveying and street lighting have been geo referenced and added to the system.
