Different formats: linking serial titles for display through bibliographic relationships. Is it possible?

Many online catalogs display each physical manifestation of a multiformat serial separately. Being able to display all the formats together as a single item could reduce confusion for the user. This study examines the feasibility of using the ISSN (022) and the additional physical entry field (776) of the MARC record for linking together the different formats of a serial for display. For multiformat serials that contain an electronic journal as one of the formats, the results show that the 776 field alone linked 96.4 percent of the records while the 022 field alone linked 80.3 percent. Using both the 776 and 022 fields, 98.6 percent of the records were linked.
