Corridors for movement o f organisms between refuges are confounded with corridors designed for other function~ obscuring an assessment o f cost.effectivenesx The rationales for movement corridors are (1) to lower extinction rate in the sense o f the equilibrium theory, (2) to lessen demographic stochastictty, (3) to stem inbreeding depression, and (4) to ful f i l l an inherent need for movement There is a paucity o f data showing how corridors are used and whether this use lessens extinction by solving these problem~ Smal~ isolated populations need not be doomed to quick extinction f rom endogenous forces such us inbreeding depression or demographic stochasttctty, i f their habitats are protected f rom human.~ In specific instance~ corridors could have biological disadvantage~ Corridor proposals cannot be adequately judged generically. In spite o f weak theoretical and empirical base~ numerous movement corridor projects are p lanned In the State o f Florid~ multi-million-dollar corridor proposals are unsupported by data on which species might use the corridors and to what effect Similarly, plans for massive corridor netumrks to counter extinction caused Paper subraitted August 13, 1991; revised manuscript accepted February 27, 1992.
