I Inner Ear Changes in Otosclerosis

Clinical evidence indicates, according to some authors, that sensorineural hearing losses are more common in patients with otosclerosis than in healthy persons of the same age group.13,15,39 Although lately greater attention has been paid to the morphological changes occurring in the cochlea of otosclerotics, there is still a striking discrepancy between the supposedly relatively frequent occurrence of sensorineural hearing losses in patients suffering from otosclerosis and the scarcity of histological evidence to explain such changes. The statement of Guild" which is based on the study of 81 temporal bones is still widely quoted that "atrophy of the cochlear nerve
