CHAPTER 2:Translational Smart Materials in Tissue Engineering

Advancement in tissue engineering strategies requires a transition from predominantly cell-based approaches to a more inclusive approach that considers other factors that contribute to tissue structure and function. The emerging field of smart materials is an example of such an advancement. Smart materials are designed to respond to small changes in physical or chemical conditions, and participate in cross-talk with resident cells, the sum of which would logically lead to constructive and functional replacement of injured or missing tissue. The present chapter reviews smart materials for tissue engineering applications, including the evolution of synthetic, biosynthetic, and biologic smart materials.
