Coorientation Variables in Family Study

This paper investigates coorientation variables as dependent variables in more or less institutionalized interpersonal units, such as husband-wife and parent-child sets of individuals. We can further limit this discussion by saying that we are primarily interested in relating various forms of communication to these dependent variables. (We will resist here the temptation to discuss other sociological and psychological variables that may impinge upon coorientation variables.) We have chosen the family unit as a prime example of an ongoing, institutionalized interpersonal unit. The family adequately serves as a working example of how coorientation variables may be operationalized, and as a ready-made field laboratory for the study of these variables. Also, the historical development of studies of interaction and communication in the family parallels the development of communication-interaction studies in general.
