Use Pinch Analysis to knock down capital costs and emissions

We give an up-to-date overview. A summary of basic concepts, with emphasis on those which are less well known than others, is followed by a description of eight recent developments. Some of these developments sharpen the focus of the established concepts, while others widen the scope. All of them follow the established pattern for Pinch Analysis of setting targets prior to design. The eight developments are: (1) Pressure Drop Optimization; (2) Multiple-Base-Case-Design; (3) Distillation Columns Profiles; (4) Low-Temperature Process Design; (5) Batch Process Integration; (6) Water Pinch; (7) Total Site Integration; and (8) Emission Targeting. To complete the overview, we provide a comprehensive summary of previous literature. Theory and applications are covered, and an historical perspective is given. The relative roles of Pinch Analysis and other methods for process integration are discussed. We concentrate on the essence not the detail, which can be found in the cited references. Case studies are described in outline. Practical applications are discussed, including the aspect of making it happen
