on these similar solutions. A valuable feature of the book is the very full set of tables of solutions for similar flows. These tables cover a wide range of pressure gradient parameter and Prandtl numbers from zero to infinity. In reviewing this book, I shall ignore the general title and treat it as a monograph on heat transfer. In this respect the book is almost self-contained in that the early chapters introduce the concepts of boundary layer theory, and develop the necessary equations. Furthermore, there is a full discussion of the role of similar solutions. The book also contains a short appendix on potential flow, and the results of this appendix are used to discuss the physical situations which give rise to similar boundary flows. I think the book is on less firm ground when non-similar flows are considered. Only one method of solution is given for nonsimilar flows. This is based on Merk's method which uses the similar solutions. It is very well explained and all the functions required are tabulated. However, as the author shows, it fails in severe adverse pressure gradients. The author dismisses this failure by suggesting that the flow here may not be laminar. On the other hand, in a book on laminar boundary layers this failure is sufficient reason for giving a brief account of other approximate methods.
