Light Sensitivity and Visual Strain when Driving at Night

Over the past years the authors have been trying to develop visual tests that will provide a means to objectively evaluate some of the visual problems encountered in unusual visual environments. A study on visual strain in 600 government VDU operators showed the importance of signs of dissatisfaction or discomfort associated with the luminous environment, not only at work but also when driving to work, particularly at night. In this paper, the visual performances of these subjects in a new visual test are presented and discussed in the light of ergophthalmology and ergonomics.
