A linear model for the corrugation of rails

Abstract A linear model for the corrugation of rails is described. The study of a transfer function between the initial wheel and rail roughness and the wear rate spectra in the contact patch is presented. Under some conditions, depending on mean creepages, wheelset and track parameters, the initial roughness on the rail is shown to degenerate into corrugation in some frequency bands. Theoretical results are presented as well as experiments made at RATP (Paris Transport Authority), especially on sharp curves.
