Self-homodyne optical OFDM for broadband WDM-PONs with crosstalk-free remodulation and enhanced tolerance to Rayleigh noise

Abstract We propose a novel architecture for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) that can simultaneously circumvent both remodulation crosstalk and Rayleigh noise, based on self-homodyne detection and optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) remodulation. The proposed self-homodyne detection at optical network unit (ONU) requires neither frequency offset compensation nor phase noise compensation, and thus can significantly reduce system complexity and power consumption. Bidirectional transmission of 12.5 Gb/s down- and up-stream signals, via single 25 km single-mode fiber without dispersion compensation, is demonstrated in a proof-of-concept experiment.
