Developing expertise – moving beyond a focus on workplace competence , assessment and qualifications

This paper intends to highlight key trends in the development of expertise in the workplace in a way that goes beyond the current obsessions of many people with issues concerned with competence, assessment and qualifications when considering workrelated skill development. In producing this paper we were asked to consider any possible discontinuities when looking at 2025 and beyond; uncertainties and any big tensions; and conclusions on what the key issues will be in future and initial reflections on any general implications for education. I will therefore highlight (in bold) any of these points within the general narrative.
