Horizontal Slice Method of Slope Stability Analysis Based on Evolutionary Algorithm

This paper studied the computing method for the stability analysis of layered strata slopes and developed the horizontal slice method (HSM) for such slopes. With the selection mode, crossover operation and mutating operation during the evolutionary process were improved, the computing efficiency and the searching capability of global optimal solution of genetic algorithm (GA) were increased. Based on this, this paper proposes a modified GA for the stability analysis and the critical slip surface searching of such slopes. Several examples were given to verify the presented method, and computing results showed that the errors between the results obtained with the proposed method and those obtained with other methods, such as Bishop's method and Chen-Morgenstern's method, were less than 5%.
