Abstract An increasing number of managers see globalization as a major trend influencing their company's future. But what exactly does the term mean and what are its practical implications for those firms on the threshold of going global? The author tackles these questions and suggests that the main feature of globalization will be that companies will seek a combination of co-ordinating mechanisms that will achieve the object with a minimum of interference in the freedom of nationally based operating units.
