Abstract Data on tests of compressive strength of 150 mm concrete cubes collected during the last 10 yr period for characteristic concretes of 150 kg/cm 2 , 250 kg/cm 2 and 350 kg/cm 2 is analysed. The statistical analysis indicates that the strength of the most of the groups of the concrete follow normal distribution with one percent significance level except for a small group of 150 kg/cm 2 concrete. The mean value and variance of the strength of the concrete in any group show a random variation. The most probable value of the failure of concrete cubes is found to be 5·5%. This value checks closely with that recommended by the CEB-FIP committee for international code of practice.
