CAMERA AND COMPUTER AIDED TRAFFIC SENSOR . SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ROAD TRAFFIC MONITORING

Delvonics Control NV has developed, in co-operation with the Belgian government and Leuven University, an advanced technology road traffic detection, measurement and control system known as CCATS. (camera and computer aided traffic sensor.) CCATS uses video camera sensors coupled to electronic units that undertake image signal processing in numeric mode. CCATS units are now going into operational service in Europe. Details of ccats traffic parameter specification, and method of data collection are provided, as are methods used to calibrate the system. Particularly significant in CCATS development has been the software means to differentiate between wanted data from video images of moving vehicles and unwanted information from moving shadows, reflections, rain, hail, snow etc. The advantages of the CCATS system over systems using conventional sensors are also enumerated.
