Experimental cryosurgery. Effect upon ocular rigidity and intraocular pressure.

The coefficient of ocular rigidity (K) and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured by direct manometric techniques in rabbits at various time intervals following cyclocryosurgery of one eye, the other eye being used as a control. In the live eye, K was significantly reduced for almost two weeks while in the dead eye, K was reduced only transiently (two to three days). After two weeks, K in both the live and dead eye rose significantly above normal. The changes in K are correlated with the histological findings of previous investigators. The implications of altered K values are discussed. Direct measurement of IOP indicated an initial rise followed by a significant reduction which persisted up to 14 weeks.
