Considerations for the design of antennas embedded in mobile communications devices

The fast growing and rapidly evolving market of mobile communications is one of the drivers of technological progress for RF and microwaves. With the maturity of cellular standards, the introduction of LTE networks, and the advent of new applications, novel and efficient antenna solutions for user terminals are required. This represents a challenge for antenna designers, who have to face the problem of integrating one or more radiating elements, often with multiband ability, into a single device of reduced size. This paper summarises some of the difficulties encountered in the design of antennas for such applications.
